  What is Functional Family Therapy?

Functional Family Therapy is an exciting, new, evidence-based intervention cited by the U.S. Surgeon General as a "program that works." This means that Functional Family Therapy has had solid, proven clinical results. In 1999, Cayuga Home for Children became the first agency in New York State to implement FFT, and is one of only two organizations in the country to offer FFT training to therapists.

Cayuga Home for Children's Functional Family Therapy offers home-based family therapy services to families with at-risk children ages 11–18. Because we believe that families are truly our partners, we work with you in your home to meet your needs. We are responsive to your family's culture, values, and lifestyle.

The Functional Family Therapy approach

Functional Family Therapy's core approach is that residential placement is only appropriate for children who cannot be safely at home. As a result, we do our best to keep children safely with their families. FFT's goal is to make obtainable, sustainable changes within the family's social and cultural values system. Because we truly believe that families are our partners, we work hard to:
  • Keep families safely together.
  • Work within the families' homes at times that are convenient to them.
  • Respect families' strengths and cultures.
  • Provide obtainable, effective interventions.
We currently offer Functional Family Therapy for prevention, intervention, and reunification in Cayuga, Chemung, Monroe, Tompkins, and Ontario counties, as well as in a Monroe aftercare program for youth being released from state custody. We also host the nation's second-only externship training center (in partnership with FFT's founding organization, FFT LLC), which provides FFT training to therapists throughout the country. Cayuga Home for Children's Functional Family Therapy-trained and certified therapists provide FFT services free to qualified families. At this time, FFT is only accessible through referrals from designated county agencies, such as P.I.N.S. or probation.

A three-phase intervention

Functional Family Therapy is a three-phase intervention covering an average of 8 to 12 one-hour sessions over a 3 to 4 month period of time.

In Phase One, the program engages and motivates youth and their families by decreasing intense negativity, blaming, and hopelessness.

In Phase Two, the program reduces and eliminates the problem behavior and the accompanying family relational patterns through individualized behavior change interventions.

In the final phase, the program generalizes changes across problem situations by increasing the family's capacity to utilize community resources and to engage in relapse prevention.

Our Functional Family Therapy programs are certified by FFT LLC, FFT's founding organization.
