Testimonial:
"My family had sought help from various professionals. Cayuga Home for Children was the only agency that came to my home and could see a different picture of what my family was going through. They asked for my input. As a mother, I felt included in the process. Their services were life saving."

     A Parent

Working to meet the changing needs of children and families

For over 150 years, Cayuga Home for Children has been serving children, families, and individuals in New York State. Originally founded in 1852, our services have steadily grown and expanded to include assisting not only children but their families, foster parents, and the developmentally disabled of all ages. Our current goal is to help people to grow and become independent, healthy, and productive citizens through quality counseling and residential and support services.

With an incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic staff, as well as a close partnership with those we serve, Cayuga Home for Children is committed to excellence. Our programs emphasize customer service, quality, and innovation.

Customer Service

We work hard to know our customers and to be responsive to their needs. We focus on families' strengths and form strong partnerships with our consumers in order to provide the best customer service available. For example, unlike many other organizations, we are accessible to our customers not just during business hours, but also during nights and weekends, when families are available. This allows us to work in close, strength-based partnerships with those we serve. As the mother of one young consumer comments, "The nice thing about Cayuga, the thing that I've liked best, is the partnership between the families and the caregivers."

Quality

Because we believe that "good enough is not good enough," we continually work to improve the already-excellent quality of our service. Not only are we available when our customers need us, but we are also committed to doing our work the right way. We focus on the success of our consumers, and build strong relationships based on our customers' needs and strengths. As one of our teenage residents says, "I know that this place is making me better, one day at a time. There's not much that really needs to be changed here." And, as another satisfied mother says, "I think the greatest strength in the program here at Cayuga Home for Children is the staff. The staff really cares about the children and adults."

Innovation

Not only is Cayuga Home for Children committed to quality care, we are also committed to innovation and to programs that have tangible, measurable results. We are a leader in the evidence-based intervention movement, which includes three programs: Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care, Functional Family Therapy, and Multisystemic Therapy. The U. S. Surgeon General has named these cost-effective, innovative, evidence-based programs as "programs that work." Cayuga Home for Children was the first agency in New York State to operate the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) and Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) programs. Recently we began offering the third evidence-based program for at-risk youth and their families, Multisystemic Therapy (MST). Cayuga Home for Children is currently the only organization in New York State offering all three programs simultaneously, and is only the second organization in the entire United States to host, in partnership with FFT LLC, an FFT externship training center for therapists. As Edward Myers Hayes, our CEO, puts it, "We're an agency that produces results. We're an agency that is willing to think outside the box to find ways of making a tangible difference in the lives of children and their families."

Our Home or Yours

Although our roots are in residential treatment, (thus the "home" in our name), our primary goal is to keep children in their own homes whenever possible. For this reason, over the last decade we have become a leader in home-based services and treatment foster care. In addition to our Residential Treatment Center, we also offer Family Resiliency, Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities (MRDD) services, Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care, Functional Family Therapy, and Multisystemic Therapy. Whether in our home or in yours, Cayuga Home for Children strives to provide the highest quality, most innovative services available to you and your family.

Our Programs

Cayuga Home for Children offers six main programs:
  • Residential Treatment Program
Our Residential Treatment Program serves youth placed by the family court system. We have a Residential Treatment Center that includes two Cottages, an alcohol and drug treatment Recovery Cottage, a co-ed Group Home, and an On-Grounds School that is run in partnership with the Auburn Enlarged City School District.

  • Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care
MTFC places youths-at-risk in homes with highly-trained and motivated foster families. This evidence-based program is a cost-effective alternative to group or residential treatment, incarceration, or hospitalization for adolescents who are particularly challenged in a group setting.

  • Functional Family Therapy
FFT is an evidence-based program that offers home-based family therapy services to families with at-risk children ages 11–18. It is a three-phase, outcome-driven, prevention/intervention model for youth who have demonstrated the entire range of maladaptive acting-out behavior and related syndromes.

  • Multisystemic Therapy
MST is an evidence-based program that assists youth at imminent risk of out-of-home placement to stay with their families. This program closely examines the situation from all angles and then helps to support and strengthen those with the most direct influence on the youth (family, peers, school, etc.), with the goal of helping the youth to change his or her problem behaviors.

  • Family Resiliency
Our Family Resiliency Programs are family-strengthening programs with a successful track record of helping families remain together. These programs offer a variety of home-based and school-based preventive programs in Cayuga and Seneca counties.

  • MRDD Services
Our MRDD services provide person-centered, individualized quality services in the areas of Medicaid Service Coordination, Day Habilitation, At-Home Residential Habilitation, Weekend Respite, and Family Reimbursement. The goal of these programs is to help individuals with Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities to meet their goals, whatever they may be.
