Cayuga Home for Children and MTFC

Cayuga Home for Children strives to serve children and families, whatever their living situation may be. Although Cayuga Home for Children strongly believes in keeping families together whenever possible, sometimes an out-of-home, non-congregate care placement is necessary for children who cannot stay at home but who do not do well in group settings. In order to serve "hard-to-place" children and their families, Cayuga Home for Children operates a certified Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care program.

MTFC is an exciting, evidence-based program that has had proven, solid results. Cayuga Home for Children was the first agency in New York State to implement this innovative program, which the U.S. Surgeon General has singled out as a "program that works", meaning that it has concrete, tangible, proven results. In Cayuga Home for Children's Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care program, children are placed with highly trained and supported foster-care parents while undergoing intensive individual and family therapy, with the goal of returning home as quickly and safely as possible. Cayuga Home for Children currently offers MTFC in Central New York and New York City.

How does Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) work?

MTFC places 12–17 year-old "hard-to-fit" youth in homes with highly motivated, trained, and supported foster families. Through a very individualized process, we carefully match host families with children to ensure a good "fit" for everyone involved. The foster home is then "flooded" with clinical and therapeutic support for both the children and the foster families, as well as for the families of origin. Utilizing a very clear point-and-level system, the children are able to change their negative behavior, which enables them to move in more positive directions. This challenging and rewarding program is a successful and cost-effective alternative for adolescents who are particularly challenged by a group setting.

Key Components
  • Every host family has daily contact with our support staff, as well as weekly support groups and training.
  • 24-hour on-call backup is available for all problems, large or small.
  • The children receive support from psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, doctors, and specialists, as well as individual weekly therapy.
  • Children work with highly trained and motivated host parents, who have only one child placed with them at a time.
  • The family of origin receives weekly family therapy.
  • Through the use of a skills trainer, children learn to increase their social skills, community involvement, and daily independent living skills.
  • Host parents utilize a clear and structured system of limits and consequences, which helps children change negative behavior.
  • Teens establish a supportive relationship with at least one mentoring adult.
  • Children's whereabouts are closely supervised and they have limited access to delinquent peers.
  • Full health services are provided for the youth, including optical and dental coverage.
  • Our program is certified by MTFC's founding organization, OSLC Community Programs.
