Residential Treatment Program
While Cayuga Home for Children's primary goal is to keep families safely at home together, in some instances this simply isn't possible. Occasionally, for a period of time, a youth needs to be in an out-of-home placement. When this need occurs, our focus is to create an individualized program to work with the youth and his or her family, with the goal of returning the child home as quickly and safely as possible. As in all of our programs, we are committed to working with families as full partners, including them in developing goals and plans, while offering therapy and family-strengthening services. While a child is staying with us, we use a hands-off, trauma-sensitive approach. By utilizing such features as Relaxation Rooms and Life Space Crisis Intervention, our program emphasizes individualized self-regulation and helps youth to gain insight, experience healing, and develop the skills necessary to return successfully to the family, home, and community. When family resources do not exist, we work either to develop them or to help the child step into a lower, more community-based level of care. Our Residential Treatment Center Cottages, alcohol and drug treatment Recovery Cottage, and Group Home provide highly individualized therapeutic milieus in which youth are supported through the use of independent living skills, positive peer culture, and individual, group, and family therapy. Residential Treatment Services With the goal of providing a safe, supportive environment for youth, Cayuga Home for Children's Residential Treatment Program offers a wide variety of individualized services. These include two Cottages with individual rooms, a specialized alcohol and drug treatment Recovery Cottage, a co-ed Group Home (a step-down option from the cottages), and an On-Grounds School that is run in partnership with the Auburn Enlarged City School District. We provide individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy, as well as offering many recreational and community-oriented activities through our Therapeutic Recreation Program. We also use Certified Independent Living Skills classes to help residents improve life skills and move forward in positive new directions. A different approach to behavior management Our individualized treatment team approach is designed to meet each youth's specific needs. From day one, each resident has an Individual Crisis Management Plan (ICMP) aimed at helping them develop self-regulation. The youth are also involved in developing and adjusting their own goals as either the goals are obtained or obstacles are encountered. When a crisis occurs, our staff take a hands-off approach, using Life Space Crisis Intervention, a verbal strategy practiced immediately after a conflict or problem occurs for a child. Its goal is for residents to gain emotional insight from a crisis, so that in future incidents they will be able to think, feel, and react differently. Additionally, we also utilize Relaxation Rooms (peaceful locations containing soothing items such as soft music and comfortable cushions), which residents can use to learn self-regulation. Through such techniques, our work is on-target and to-the-point, with the goal of getting children to the next step and keeping them there. We invite county workers and families to participate as much as possible in treatment planning.
